John Henkelman

John Henkelman is a dedicated community advocate and educator living in Sanford, Maine with a deep commitment to fostering a resilient and thriving future for the city. As an Adjunct Professor of Environmental Studies at the University of New England and a Ph.D. candidate at the University of New Hampshire, John brings a unique blend of academic rigor and practical community engagement to the board. John is an active member of the Sanford Recreation Advisory Board and a Registered Maine Guide, roles that allow him to connect directly with local families and youth through outdoor education and community science projects.

With a Master of Science in Recreation Management and Policy and a Bachelor of Science in Biology, John understands the important link between local conditions and healthy development. He is eager to nurture the partnerships and sustainable activities that define the mission of Strategies for a Stronger Sanford, ensuring that every child and family in the community has the support they need to succeed.
